Are You Ready for Earthquakes?

For hundreds of millions of years, the forces of plate tectonics have shaped the earth, as the huge plates that form the earths surface slowly move over, under, and past each other. Sometimes, the movement is gradual. At other times, the plates are locked together, unable to release the accumulating energy. When the accumulated energy grows strong enough, the plates break free. If the earthquake occurs in a populated area, it may cause many deaths and injuries and extensive property damage.

Where Earthquakes Occur

Earthquakes occur everywhere – so, at least, it seems. Temblors happen on all continents and beneath the deep oceans. They shake the world’s highest mountains, the Himalayas, and the Earth’s deepest valley, the Dead Sea. Even from under the ice caps of both polar regions, seismometers regularly record rumblings in the Earth’s crust. But a more detailed look reveals that the distribution of earthquake foci in the world is by no means random. And neither are they evenly or regularly spaced. Instead, when plotted on a world map, earthquake locations look like narrow bands winding through the continents and oceans (see map). What are these zones and why are most earthquakes foci concentrated there?

Drawing representations of the Earth’s surface area goes again as far as hundreds of years B.C. Some of the earliest discovered “maps” date back again to the ancient Babylonians and indigenous peoples. Of training course we all know that the historical Egyptians employed to draw their maps with hieroglyphics. It was the historical Greeks, however, who actually started drawing detailed maps. It was Ptolemy’s historic map of the world that made its mark on the globe. At any time because then, human type has been studying the particulars of the world and drawing them.

South Sudan has become the world’s newest nation

South Sudan has become the world’s newest nation, after the 2005 peace deal that ended a long and bloody civil war.

South Sudan is rich in Oil, But also world’d least developed countries.

On 9th July 2011, Southern Sudan will become the Republic of South Sudan, a date and event which the people of South Sudan and other countries in the international community hold sacred. It is hard to express just how important this is to Southern Sudan People & all but they are most excited that so many people across the world want to share in this celebrations.

How Thick Is the Earth’s Crust?

We present a new contour map of the thickness of the Earth’s crust. We use a 10 km contour interval plus the 45 km contour.

This contour map was created directly from the 5 deg. by 5 deg. gridded crustal model CRUST 5.1 (Mooney et al., 1998) plus complementary information.
